The Hellenism of Istanbul after the Population Exchange Treaty (1923-2016)
The 2nd scientific conference organized by the Historical Archive of Refugee Hellenism was held in collaboration with the Municipality of Kalamaria and the International University of Greece from 30 September to 2 October 2016, at the Municipal Theatre of Kalamaria “Melina Merkouri”.
The conference was attended by more than 30 scientists from universities and research centers in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. One of the most interesting elements of the conference was interdisciplinarity, since the program included different specialties: historians, social anthropologists, political scientists, lawyers, educators, artists.
Of great interest and emotion were the experiential narratives of people of Constantinople living in Thessaloniki, who narrated to the public their experiences and shared the trauma of the violence of September 1955 and the mass expulsions, as well as the difficulties of adapting to their new homeland, Greece.
The public had the opportunity to watch the documentary “The Loss of the Fatherland” by Turkish director Aydin Kapancik and to see the exhibition “The hot September events in the headlines” of the Makrochori of Constantinople Cultural Association “The Seventh of Byzantium” and the Association of Expatriates from Constantinople of Northern Greece, which was hosted at the Municipal Theatre of Chilis Street from 29/9 to 2/10 as part of the conference.
The conference was a leading educational and cultural event for Thessaloniki, as well as an important step in the research carried out by our Historical Archive on the Hellenism of the City.
