The Hellenism of Constantinople after the Population Exchange Treaty (1923-2016)
The 2nd scientific conference organized by the Historical Archive of the Refugee Hellenism was held in cooperation with the Municipality of Kalamaria and the International Hellenic University during the period September 30 – October 2, 2016, at the Municipal Theatre of Kalamaria “Melina Merkouri”.
More than 30 scientists from universities and research centers of Greece, Cyprus and Turkey participated in the conference with their presentations. One of the most interesting elements of the conference was its interdisciplinary nature, since the program included different disciplines: historians, social anthropologists, political scientists, lawyers, pedagogists, artists.
Great interest and emotion were aroused by the experiential narratives of Constantinopolitans living in Thessaloniki, who told the audience about their experiences and shared the trauma of the violence of September 1955 and the mass deportations, as well as the difficulties of adapting to their new homeland, Greece.
The public had the opportunity to watch the documentary “The Loss of the Homeland” by the Turkish director Aydin Kapancik and to visit the exhibition “The September riots in the headlines” by the Cultural Association of Makrochori Constantinople “The Seventh of Byzantium” and the Union of Expatriates from Constantinople of Northern Greece, which was hosted, within the framework of the conference, at the Municipal Theatre of Chilis street from 29/9 to 2/10.
The conference was a leading educational and cultural event for Thessaloniki, but also an important step in the research carried out by our Historical Archive on the Hellenism of the City.
